It is probably unparalleled - never before has music inspired by a thirty-year-old era evolved into something greater, into a new and vibrant musical movement. It is also intriguing to observe the phantom nostalgia that most fans of this genre have for the bygone era of the 80s - many of them weren't even born then.

In a nutshell, the genre can be described as a return to the sounds and imagery of 1980s pop culture and the early 1990s.

The terms "synthwave" and "retrowave" are modern names for the main genre, and they are widely used when discussing this music.
